Tamworth Castle

Restoration

Tamworth Castle is a large Motte and bailey castle built in the Norman period, located high above the town to dominate the approach over the rivers Anker & Tame which meet below the castle. Its sandstone walls and superb herringbone wall – all that survives of the bailey are believed to date from the 1180s.

Over the years Tamworth Scaffolding Co Ltd have carried out numerous projects at the castle and the surrounding area within the castle’s vicinity.

In the spring of 2008, the first phase of urgent repair works was carried out which involved the stabilisation of the merlons, conservation works to the stone herringbone wall, stone & roof repairs to the tower and a complete dismantle and re-build of the 17th century internal link footbridge.

Then during the autumn of 2012 after competitive tender we were awarded phase 2 of the works which involved the erection of access scaffolds to the complete perimeter footpath retaining wall along with access staircase and rubbish chute up to and various other works.

Tamworth Scaffolding Co Ltd successfully won both contracts to supply & erect over 90 tonnes of scaffolding to give the masons and lead workers safe access to carry out the repairs. The main access scaffold for the tower was erected to a complex design due to the stone base of the tower protruding 2m outwards from the main wall this was achieved by a series of towers and heavy duty aluminium beams spanning the stone outcrop enabling a double width scaffold to be constructed giving access to the works.

Deliveries of the scaffolding materials coincided with quieter periods, as the castle remained open during the repair works, and were carried out with minimal disruption to visitors and the day to day running of the castle.

In the summer of 2025 we were involved in the castle bridge project providing designed access scaffolds and birdcages for the replacement of the castle bridge.

In early 2026 we were awarded the scaffold package for the refurbishment works to Holloway Lodge – The gatehouse to the castle.

In the summer of 2026 we will be working closely with Messenger BCR, on the £1.9 million refurbishment of the castle, further updates to follow.
