Project Description: Tamworth Scaffolding Supports Major Heritage Restoration at Attingham Park
In 2013, Tamworth Scaffolding was proud to play a role in the landmark ‘Attingham Goes Through the Roof” restoration project at Attingham Park, one of the National Trust’s most important historic properties.
The project formed part of the wider Attingham Re-discovered programme, which aimed to conserve and protect significant areas of the Grade I listed mansion for future generations. A key element of the restoration involved the installation of a new protective glass roof over the existing John Nash roof structure protecting the historic Picture Gallery below.
The Challenge
For more than 200 years, the original roof above the Picture Gallery had been vulnerable to water ingress. Ongoing leaks and moisture penetration posed a serious threat to the historic fabric of the building, including decorative plasterwork, structural timbers and valuable interior features.
To address these issues, conservation specialists designed a new glass roof structure that would provide long-term protection while preserving the building’s historic character. Delivering this work within a live visitor attraction presented additional challenges, requiring safe access solutions and carefully managed construction activities.
Our Role
Tamworth Scaffolding was appointed as part of the project team to provide the specialist access scaffolding required for the roof restoration works.
Working alongside contractors, conservation specialists and project managers, we designed and erected a designed scaffolding that enabled safe access to difficult-to-reach areas of the historic building along with a weathertight temporary roof structure. The scaffolding had to be installed with great care to protect the heritage structure while providing secure working platforms and a watertight environment for the restoration teams.
Throughout the project, safety, reliability and minimal disruption to visitors remained key priorities.
The Outcome
The successful installation of the new glass roof created a protective barrier over the historic roof below, helping to prevent further water damage and securing the long-term preservation of this important part of Attingham Park.
Tamworth Scaffolding is proud to have contributed to a project that combined modern engineering with heritage conservation, helping safeguard a nationally significant historic building for future generations.
