Restoration

St John’s Chapel in Lichfield is a historic Grade I listed building, dating back to the 12th century. As one of Lichfield’s oldest surviving buildings, the chapel required careful consideration when access was needed for restoration and maintenance works. Our team was brought in to provide safe, secure and sympathetic scaffolding, allowing the works to be carried out while protecting the historic fabric of the building.

Our Role

Our scope included the installation of a temporary weather protection scaffold over the existing structure, helping to protect the building from the elements while allowing the works to be carried out safely and efficiently. Due to the listed status of the building, the scaffold was designed as a free-standing arrangement, with careful consideration given to the existing structure and surrounding property throughout the installation.

Challenges

  • Listed historic structure – protecting the existing fabric and avoiding unnecessary impact on the building.
  • Free-standing scaffold design – providing a stable structure without relying on fixings into the listed building.
  • Weather protection – creating an effective temporary roof and ensuring the structure remained suitable for the duration of the works.
  • Restricted working area – working around the existing building and surrounding property with limited space.
  • Safe access – providing safe and practical access for the trades carrying out the restoration works.
  • Protection of the existing structure – ensuring the scaffold installation and removal did not damage the historic fabric of the chapel.

Project Completion

The completed scaffold provided a safe, stable and fully weather-protected working environment, allowing the restoration works to progress efficiently while respecting the historic nature of St John’s Chapel. Through careful planning and installation, our team delivered a bespoke access solution that met the requirements of the project while protecting the existing listed structure throughout the works.
